Mahogany is a noble and versatile wood widely used in guitar construction, known for its characteristic sound and exceptional durability.
Physical Characteristics
Density and Color
Mahogany has a density of 540 kg/m³, making it a relatively heavy wood. Its color is a medium-dark brown with reddish hues, which makes it ideal for gold-colored varnish finishes.
Structure
It is a very dense wood with an interlocking grain, providing stability and ease of work. Due to its porosity, it requires specific treatment with grain filler to avoid excessive thickness in the finish.
Sound Properties
Warm sound and sustain
Mahogany produces a rich, warm sound with excellent sustain, particularly enhancing low frequencies. It offers a neutral tone that serves as a great foundation for building different sound profiles.
Tonal Characteristics
- Warm and sweet sound with very good sustain
- Rich low frequencies with slightly recessed mids
- Great body and resonance, especially appreciated in Mariano Conde guitars
Technical aspects
Construction
The construction process using mahogany begins with rigorous moisture control. The wood is naturally dried over time (at least 15-20 years), with meticulous monitoring of its moisture levels.
The most valued mahogany is the American species, Swietenia Macrophylla, which is now prohibited from being harvested, making it even more valuable. However, there are various species labeled as “mahogany” from Africa, for example, which also yield excellent results. These trees can reach heights of 30 meters and diameters of 1.2 to 1.8 meters.
Structural Properties
- High strength and stability
- Excellent durability against impacts and environmental changes
- Highly resistant to deformation over time
