Maple wood is one of the most versatile and appreciated materials in guitar construction, particularly for backs and sides, and occasionally for necks.
Physical characteristics
Density and color
Maple features a heartwood that ranges from white to pale yellow, while its sapwood is nearly white with reddish hues. It is a semi-heavy wood, with an approximate density of 700 kg/m³ at 12% humidity. Young bark has a distinctive bright silver-gray color.
Structure
It generally has a straight grain, occasionally wavy, with a texture ranging from very fine to fine. Its uniform structure and fine pores contribute to its high durability.
Sound properties
Bright and articulated sound
Maple produces a bright and articulated sound, characterized by good attack and sustain. It enhances the treble and midrange frequencies with good volume, increasing the liveliness of the sound, making solos stand out over accompaniment.
Tonal characteristics
The density and stiffness of maple contribute to a bell-like, crystalline sound, providing a strong “punch” in the lower frequencies. It is particularly effective in adding brightness and definition to the sound when combined with more neutral woods like spruce.
Technical aspects
Main varieties
Different types of maple used in guitars include:
- Bird’s Eye Maple
- Rock Maple (standard maple)
- Quilted Maple
- Flamed Maple
Structural properties
- High wear resistance
- Moderate durability
- Good dimensional stability
- Susceptibility to fungi and insect attacks
Practical considerations
Workability
Maple is extremely difficult to carve due to its high resistance, but it allows for an excellent finish in terms of staining, varnishing, and polishing. It is important to note that it can yellow easily during processing.
Ideal applications
Maple is particularly suitable for:
- Necks (on rare occasions)
- Backs and sides
- Combining with neutral woods to enhance tonal definition, such as spruce and cedar
